Dr. Lesley Russell discusses the burdens of back pain in the SMH

The direct cost of care for lower back pain amounts to about $1 billion dollars annually. However these direct costs are minor compared to the indirect costs of $8 billion that arise as a consequence of lost productivity and disability. Dr. Lesley Russell, a senior research fellow at Australian National University tells the Sydney Morning Herald why we need a cultural shift in the way back pain is viewed as a national health problem and its relationship to activity and the work environment.
